Flying Mountain Trail
Flying Mountain
Length: .3 mile from parking area of Fernald Pont Road to the Flying Mountain summit
Difficulty Rating: Moderate
The Flying Mountain trail is a short but deliberate ascent up Acadia’s smallest peak. The trail gains elevation rapidly, moving over uneven terrain including roots, small boulders and steep granite ledges. The views from the summit overlooking Somes Sound are rewarding.
To hike Flying Mountain as a loop, continue over the summit on the Flying Mountain trail for .3 mile. Turn left at the junction with the Valley Cove Road and continue on the Valley Cove Road for .5 mile to the parking area.
Note: The portion of the Flying Mountain trail between the Valley Cove Road and the Man O’ War Brook Fire Road is frequently closed in the spring and summer to protect nesting peregrine falcons. See the park’s website for current information at www.nps.gov/acad.
