South Ridge Trail
Sargent Mountain
Length: 2.6 miles from Carriage road intersection by Brown Mountain Gatehouse to the summit
Difficulty Rating: Moderate
The Sargent Mountain South Ridge trail is the most moderate way to ascend Sargent Mountain. To connect to this gradual trail, park at the Brown Mountain Gatehouse and follow the carriage road to the left. At signpost 18, keep right, continue on the carriage road, then at signpost 19 keep right. The trail head for the Sargent Mountain South Ridge Trail is on the left approximately .6 mile from the Gate House.
This trail begins in the woods and has occasional steep rises but becomes more level after the first .5 mile. The trail meanders through coniferous forest, frequently interrupted by overlooks. At approximately 1.2 miles in, the trail opens and Cedar Swamp, Penobscot and Sargent Mountain’s peaks are all visible. As the trail opens, the substrate becomes primarily granite and remains this way for the duration to the summit. The trail bypasses the summit of Cedar Swamp Mountain, but it is well worth it to deviate from the trail to visit the summit. The trail then dips down before gaining elevation again toward Penobscot Mountain. After the short climb, the trail becomes less severe and moves over the ridge until it reaches the summit.
