Parkman Mountain Trail
Length: 1.4 miles from the Route 198/3 parking pull off to the summit
Difficulty Rating: Moderate
The Parkman Mountain trail is a diverse hike over mixed terrain and a changing landscape. The trail begins in the woods and moves over forest floor with a mixture of some smaller boulders. After crossing the carriage roads twice, the trail quickly opens up and follows granite slabs and ledges. A single iron rung is found on the trail approximately .7 mile from the trail head to help hikers move up this short, steep section.
The trail then fluctuates from moderate grades to steeper inclines until reaching the summit. The Summit of Parkman Mountain overlooks Somes Sound and Norumbega to the west and Sargent Mountain dominates the Eastern view. At .1 mile from the Parkman mountain summit is a junction for the Bald Peak Trail. It is .2 mile to the summit from this point and combining these 2 peaks in a loop creates a good hike. It’s easier to ascend the Bald Peak trail and then continue onto Parkman, backtrack slightly and then descend the Parkman Mountain Trail.
